A Life of a Monk During the Middle Ages, Medieval monks gave up the good of life and lived a life based on three main vows: The Vow of Poverty The Vow of Chastity The Vow of Obedience The vows monks took ensured their obedience, obeying directions they were given, failure to obey = violation of their vow

  3. Daily Life of a Monk Monks spent several hours of their time reading the Bible, praying, and doing other manual work They also meditated

  4. Manual Labor & Chores Monks also did many chores and had jobs to do such as: Growing their own food Educating others(boys and novices) Copying manual scripts and other literature Washing and cooking Providing hospitality for those on the go Providing medical care for the community

  6. Jobs and Occupations Abbot: head monk or head of the abbey Almoner: officer who dispensed alms to the sick & poor Cantor: leader of the choir Cellarer: supervised and general provisioning Infirmarian: charge of the infirmary Lector: monk with reading lessons Sacrist: safe keeping monk

  7. Life on the Monastery Life on the Monastery was simpler than the one outside beyond the walls of their home Monks provided their service to worship God Prayers were really important to monks Praying in a group was called: common prayer

Daily Routine Lauds : the early morning service of divine office approx 5am Matins : the night office; the service recited at 2 am in the divine office Prime : The 6am service Sext : the third of the Little Hours of divine office, recited at the sixth hour (noon) Nones : the fourth of the Little Hours of the divine office, recited at the ninth hour (3 pm) Terce : the second of the Little Hours of divine office, recited at the third hour (9 am) Vespers : the evening service of divine office, recited before dark (4 - 5pm) Compline : the last of the day services of divine office, recited before retiring (6pm)
