  2. Greg Mortenson and the C.A.I. • Greg Mortenson (with the help of Jean Hoerni) started the Central Asia Institute. His charity has helped to educate thousands of Muslim children. • The C.A.I. has done great work, and there are many other organizations that do similar things.

  3. American Red Cross • The American Red Cross is one of the largest charitable organizations. • The Red Cross sends volunteers and money to places where there has been a disaster. They sent relief to New Orleans, Haiti, and Pakistan. • The Red Cross also collects blood donations.

  4. The American Cancer Society • The American Cancer Society (ACS) is among the nations top donators to cancer patients and hospitals. • In 2005, the ACS donated $848,000,000 to cancer patients.

  5. Defenders of Wildlife (DW) • The Defenders of Wildlife is an organization that helps defend endangered animals. The DW also sends relief money and volunteers to spots of ecological disasters, like the gulf oil spill. • The DW has been a major contributor to helping the marine life affected by the oil spill. Even though they have done a lot to help, the gulf spill has killed countless animals. According to the DW, there have been over 4,000 birds, over 500 sea turtles, and about 73 marine mammals that have been discovered dead in the gulf.

  6. Oxfam-America • Oxfam-America sends money to areas in the world that have been hit by disasters and areas that have extreme poverty. • Oxfam-America has sent money to places like Haiti, Pakistan, and Darfur.
