Classification of a platypus GENUS: Ornithorhynchus (Duck-billed) ~Has a duck-bill with nostrils for breathing which can be closed when the duckbill platypus is under water • KINGDOM: Animalia (Animal) • ~ Considered a mammal • ~Warm blooded • ~Has hair or fur on their bodies • ~Has lungs to breathe air SPECIES: Ornithorhynchusanatinus(Duck-billed platypus) ~Has a duck-bill ~Is a mammal called platypus
Scientific name • Ornithorhynchusanatinus • Derived from the Greek words for “bird-snout”, “flat”, “foot”, and “duck-like” • The animal is called “duck-billed” • There is no agreed term for the plural of platypus
Reproduction of a platypus • Mammals who lay eggs • Mating season is from August to October • Female platypuses lay eggs in the “nesting chamber” • Size of the egg is compared to lima bean
Reproduction cont. • One to two eggs are produced daily • Eggs are held between the platypus’s body and tail to keep eggs warm (90 degree temp.) • Hatch after 10 days of incubation
Cell division of a platypus • Cell Division type: Mitosis • Definition: A continuous process that consists of various stages: • Interphase • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • Cytokinesis ~Process of Mitosis Diploid cell: contains two sets of chromosomes
Cell division of a platypus cont. • Mitosis: The process where a single cell divides resulting in generally two identical cells, each containing the same number of chromosomes and genetic content as the original cell • At Interphase, there is only one cell, but after cytokinesis there are two identical cells 1: Interphase 2: Prophase 3: Metaphase 4: Anaphase 5: Telophase 6: Cytokinesis
How a platypus develops in an egg • FACTS • Female platypus will lay between one to three small eggs • Eggs are similar to reptile eggs • Egg developing takes about ten days for the whole process
Incubation (Hatching) • 3 stages • The embryo relies on the yolk for sustenance • Embryo has fully absorbed the yolk and it begins to develop limbs and digits • Platypus begins to develop teeth
After hatching • A mother typically produces one or two eggs and keeps them warm by holding them between her body and her tail • A platypus mother nurses its young for 2 to 4 months until the babies can swim on their own
