Nature Of Work • He is in overall charge of the rig. Hence sometimes called "Man In Charge" (MIC). • The OIM is the overall responsible for the rig and its personnel. • His/her position is equivalent to the Captain position on board a ship. • He/she must take an extensive series of safety, environmental and leadership courses to build up the necessary theoretical knowledge to lead a crew of up to 180 members. • Long work periods with many hours.
Education and Training needed • Has often worked his way up through the drill crew ranks. • Minimum education High School/Secondary. • Certificate of competency – STCW 95 II/2 unlimited (Master) • DP Operator’s certificate (only for DP Semi-submersibles and Drill ships) • IMCA DP Logbook • Minimum 5 years offshore experience • Experience as Security/Safety Officer preferred
Other Qualifications necessary • Engineering degree and 5-8 years of experience from DTU/TLP operation. • Or similar from fixed installations, preferably worked as OIM. • You start in the maritime industry to obtain the necessary marine certificates. • You can then change to the offshore industry – typically the marine section – and build up offshore experience before moving up the hierarchy.

Job outlook and (future) prospects • Participate as Operations representative in the detailed design phase, including design review, adding constructive and relevant operational experience to the project. • Many offshore operators have adopted this UK offshore management model and title and applied it to their operations in all global regions irrespective of the local regulations in force. • Ensures full compliance with all mandatory procedures and regulations that relate to production operations • Oversees daily production/platform operation activities • Manages emergencies
