  3. DIVERSITY (Different races & ethnicities) • NEW BUSINESSES • SEVERAL CHURCH YOUTH GROUPS, RECREATIONAL & COMMUNITY CENTERS • SW DETROIT IS GROWING (the only part of Detroit where population is growing)

  4. SITUATION: PROBLEMS

  5. GANG VIOLENCE & INCREASED GANG ACTIVITY (“killing season” in the summer) • DRUG DEALERS (especially really young kids) AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE • NOT ENOUGH YOUTH PROGRAMS (especially in some parts of SW) • HIGH DROP-OUT RATE • NOT ENOUGH JOBS FOR YOUTH

  6. PRIORITIES

PRIORITY I: COMPREHENSIVE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS:A YOUTH CENTER IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD • SAFE HOUSE • OLDER YOUTH MENTOR YOUNGER YOUTH • GANG ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS • COUNSELING / THERAPY • TUTORING/ COMPUTERS • JOB TRAINING & JOBS FOR YOUTH • YOUTH ORIENTED / DRIVEN ACTIVITIES • COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

  8. PRIORITY II: COMMUNITY SURVEILLANCE • NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH GROUP • COMMUNITY GROUPS • BLOCK CLUBS • PARENTS

  9. PRIORITY III: HOMELESS SHELTERS • JOB TRAINING • SKILLED TRADES

  10. IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES Comprehensive Youth Centers • Mission to provide a Safe Haven for Youth • Resource Center • Link with businesses, churches, schools other groups • Easily Accessible

  11. RESOURCES • INFORMATION CENTER (WELCOMING CENTER) FOR YOUTH & FAMILIES • MANUALS OF GOVERNMENT RESOURCES • BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS • HOMELESS SHELTER • TRANSPORTATION

  12. PARTICIPATION We Need the Involvement of : • Youth in the community • Parents • Government • Teachers • Businesses • Foundations – ex. Skillman • Community agencies • Police and Fire Departments

  13. OUTCOMES • Youth will make more positive choices • More youth will have jobs • Less violence and crime • Cleaner community

  14. Outcomes • More youth involved in positive activities • More programs for youth • Less youth in gangs • Less homelessness for youth
