  1. Standard 6.4.2: The Water Cycle

  2. Water is always moving between the atmosphere (troposphere) and surface of Earth. Evaporation- water turning into vapor Transpiration-plants releasing water vapor through their leaves. Water enters the atmosphere as water vapor through evaporation and transpiration.

  3. Condensation-is when water droplets stick together to form clouds. • Condensation happens in the atmosphere. • Precipitation-water droplets falling from clouds in various forms: rain, snow, freezing rain, sleet, or hail. • The type of precipitation depends on the weather conditions & how high up the clouds are that it is falling from. • The higher the clouds, the colder it is.

  4. Water will remain on the Earth’s surface when the surface is not porous (asphalt or concrete) or if the precipitation is falling too fast for the water to sink into the ground (flooding). • Water will sink into the ground when the surface is porous (dry sand & soil) and there is lots of space in the soil to hold the water ( mud puddles).

  5. Run-off-If too much rain falls at one time, the water will accumulate on the surface of the earth & flow down hill & towards lower areas. • Precipitation falls on land surfaces, & always attempts to move back toward sea level as surface-water flow. • surface-water flow is water that flows above ground: creeks, rivers, etc. • Groundwater flow is water that flows under ground.

  6. Sometimes the soil becomes saturated with water & it cannot hold any more. Runoff occurs then. (Think of filling a flower pot with too much water & the water runs out the bottom.)
