Employer Regulations; The law states that all employers must ensure/provide; tiltable screens, anti-glare screens, adjustable chairs, foot supports, suitable lighting, enough space in workstations, frequent planned breaks, pay for eye tests by optician.
General Working Environment; • No trailing wires (all trip hazards removed) • No food or drink by machines • Electrical sockets must not be overloaded • Adequate space around the machine • Suitable heating and ventilation • Lighting must not cause glares or reflections • Benches must be strong enough to support computers
Possible Problems and Solutions Back problems; Most computer users suffer from back problems due to sitting at an unnatural/poor position which can damage the spine. This problem can be easily solved by providing adjustable chairs, footrests and tiltable screens. A picture on the next slide shows solutions.
Tiltable screens suitable desk length to prevent the body from being hunched over. Adjustable chairs Footrests
Possible Problems and Solutions Eyestrain; Eyes may become strained due to long time spent staring at a computer screen, a flickering screen. Or working in bad light or with a glare. This can easily be solved by using screen filters to reduce harmful rays, and ones that don’t flicker. It also helps taking regular breaks and working in a suitably lit area with blinds to reduce glare.
Possible Problems and Solutions RSI; Repetitive strain injury is caused by repetitive movements over a long period of time. This can happen to many computer users. To prevent RSI you should take frequent breaks from typing and sit with a good posture to prevent injuries to the wrists.
Possible Problems and Solutions Ozone Irritation; Health experts have found evidence that some laser printers can cause breathing problems. To avoid this, workers should be seated a meter away from the printers in a room with good ventilation.
