  2. Before his Birth • Son of Uther Pendragon • Uther desires to marry Igraine wife of Gorlois duke of Cornwall • Uther tricks Igraine with Merlin’s help • Arthur is conceived

  3. Arthur’s Early Years • Arthur becomes king while he is young: Sword in the Stone • Merlin guides him to be a wise king • In a series of 12 battles, he establishes himself as the ruler of Britian

  4. Arthur’s Middle Years • Marries Lady Guenevere • Establishes a long period of peace • Builds nation unmatched in culture and wealth • Establishes order of knighthood dedicated to chivalry and freedom: Knights of the Round Table

  5. Arthur's Demise • Lady Guenevere and Sir Lancelot start bad cycle • Arthur leaves Camelot in the hands of Mordred • Arthur is mortally wounded in the battle and is carried to the Island of Avalon • His wounds are tended to, he remains alive waiting to return and restore England to the golden age

  6. Man or Myth? • No evidence of an actual King Arthur • Based on Riothamus • Based on Artur or Arturius, the son of Aidan

  7. Is King Arthur Riothamus? • Riothamus = “Greatest King” • was said to have campaigned in Gaul and disappeared around 470 in Burgundy • But the Welsh said Riothamus died in Camlann fighting another Briton in 539 • After he liberated the Britons his story became legend and blown out of proportion.

  8. Or Is he Artur Son of Aidan? • Artur or Arturius, the son of Aidan, and a real 6th century figure • Son of a most powerful King • Was Christian (most were pagans) • Ally to the Northern King Urien, who was a real historical figure and in the legends as an ally of Arthur

  9. Continued… • He was an ally of the Kings of the Britons in the wars in the North against the Saxons/Angles and the Picts. • He died in battle against the Picts. • Artur or Arturius had a sister or half sister called Morgan, as did King Arthur of legend.
