Georgetown University Using iPads to Enhance Teaching and Learning on Patient Rounds Jonathan Hartmann, MLS 1Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC Discussion Abstract Results The HI provides high quality evidence-based information quickly for both patient care and education of medical students and residents. The HI’s participation in rounds enables medical students and residents to more easily and efficiently access medical information. The HI provides background information on medical topics as well as information relevant to the care of patients seen on rounds. Without the aid of the HI on rounds, residents and medical students would have to search for evidence-based information themselves which is very difficult to do effectively while trying to see and report on patients. Also, in some cases residents and medical students would be unable to retrieve relevant information due to lack of access to the full complement of resources the HI provides as well as their limited searching skills. . In addition to the Dahlgren Library’s online resources, the HI can access UpToDate; the diagnostic program Isabel; and Linguamatics i2e text-mining software. By incorporating the Isabel app into teaching rounds, the HI helps medical students and residents to practice using diagnostic software on real patient cases. The HI also uses Linguamatics i2e to text-mine MEDLINE abstracts which enables faster retrieval of more relevant information. This paper describes how the rounding services provided by Hospital Informationist Jonathan Hartmann contribute to medical education at Georgetown University Medical Center. Introduction In 2009 the Hospital Informationist (HI) began attending patient rounds in MGUH, starting with the Department of Internal Medicine teaching rounds. Initially it was difficult to retrieve and display information efficiently using an iPhone; however in 2010 the HI began using an iPad which greatly facilitated this effort. The HI currently provides daily rounding services to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Department of Internal Medicine. Conclusion The Hospital Informationist’s participation in teaching rounds, facilitated by use of an iPad, improves medical education at GUMC. The HI worked with Linguamatics developers to create the Portal which enables the use of the Linguamatics i2e text-mining software on an iPad. This is the first time text-mining software has been used to access information on clinical rounds. For five columns, line up guides with these boxes For three columns, line up guides with these boxes
