Background • Around 65-70 AD • First gospel written. • Synoptic • Audience were Gentile Christians being persecuted. • Christians in Syria • Christians in Palestine • Christians during the first Revolt against Rome • These groups were hated BOTH by Jews and Romans.
Mark’s gospel • Based on Peter’s testimony. • Because of the audience, the gospel focuses on remaining faithful to Jesus. • Emphasizes that Jesus himself suffered • Mark says his followers must undergo suffering in order to gain eternal life.
