  2. INTRODUCTION The Vision for the Agricultural Sector: • Agriculture to insure quantity and quality food security for all Burundians. • Transform subsistence to business agriculture, • insure decent revenue to households concerned with environment and good management of resources.

  3. Characteristics and basic aspects • Agriculture is basically of subsistence type. • Agriculture is practiced in a traditional and rudimentary manner by around 1.2 million rural families (90% of hseouholds) on small land whose average size is around 0.5 ha. • Land demographic pressure aggravates tenure problems which in turn affects productivity level and environment deterioration.

Characteristics and basic aspects (Cont) • -Burundi agriculture is almost dependent of rains. • -In spite of its critical position in the economy the productivity of the agricultural sector is very poor, compared to other African countries. • -Women play a central role in food sovereignty for families and communities but the majority remains largely marginalized and dependent

  5. Constraints • Various problems with Burundi agriculture may be summarized and classified in five categories: • (i) agronomic problems, • (ii) climate problems, • (iii) technological problems, • (iv) socio economic problems and • (v) institutional problems.

Policy and Strategic Framework • 1 .Burundi Vision 2025 In December 2010, Burundi “Vision 2025”ambitions to put Burundi on the path of sustainable development by 2025. •  2.PRSP In September 2006, Strategic Plan (PRSP I), mainlines: i) improvement of governance and security; ii) promotion of sustainable and equitable economic growth; iii) human capital development; iv) fighting HIV/AIDS.

Policy and Strategic Framework Other sectoral and sub-sectoral documents • National Program on Food Security (NPFS), • Strategic Policy for Livestock (DSP-Livestock), • National strategy for fisheries, • Master Plan for Agricultural Research, • Strategy for the management of watershed basins and marshlands. • The Priority Action Program (PAP)

  8. CAADP PILLARS • Pillar 1: Sustainable Land and Water Management ; • Pillar 2: Rural Infrastructure and Trade-Related Capacities for Improved Market Access ; • Pillar 3: Food Supply and Hunger ; • Pillar 4: Agricultural Research, Technology Dissemination and Adoption.

  13. Level of stakeholder commitment • Government and donors: funding • Private sector: implementation • Civil society: implementation specially farmers organisation There a sectoral group (GSADR): sectoral platform where all issues are discussed.
