E N D
Harvard University gives this notice to incoming freshman: “First of all, throw away the highlighter in favor of a pen or pencil. Highlighting can actually distract you from the business of learning and dilute your comprehension. In actual fact, it can lure you into a dangerous passivity” (2005).
Directions: • Read the article “If dress code doesn’t suit teens, school district will” • As you read the article, do what I’ve done: • Underline information that is important, surprising, interesting, or thought provoking. • After underlining, but before beginning to read again, jot down a sentence or two that explains why you chose that bit to underline. • Explain your thoughts, ideas, opinions, etc.
Now… • Pair up with someone at your table to discuss the article and share annotations. • How were your annotations similar? How were they different? • Be sure to answer any questions the two of you might have written.
Volunteers? • Would anyone be willing to share their annotations with the class? • *There might be Gee dollars in it for you.
