Goal • To increase the practice of prevention behaviors by staff and campers by instructing camp directors and their staff on prevention, detection and screening for melanoma and other skin cancers.
Objective • Public Health Sanitation and Safety Program make information available on prevention, detection and screening of melanoma to all youth summer camps that apply for annual licensing
Strategies • Train representatives in the prevention, detection and screening process of melanoma and skin cancer • Standardize sun safety and melanoma prevention tools • Encourage statewide legislation
Why do camps NEED TO KNOW? • Unprotected sun exposure is RISKY BUSINESS • 700 Youth Camp Licenses • 400,000+ campers • Ten’s of thousands support staff
What is New Jersey doing now? • 16 page set of guidelines to operate a youth camp, updated in 2003 • County Health Departments, inspect all registered Youth Camps
What are camps required to teach their staff about health? • Not Enough! • Janelle Post, former Director of Camp Moore, “ It is all up for the Director to interpret as to what is important for the staff to know.” • Standardization is necessary for sun safety precautions for Camp Directors
Short Term Goals • Partner with the NJ office of the American Camp Association (ACA) • Newsletters, website and training material • Partner with the YMCA in NJ over 70 camps in the state
Long Term Goals • Present at the 26th Annual ACA Convention in March ‘08 • Legislative Proposal: Guidelines for Camps to be responsible to educate the staff and campers about safety precautions and risks of melanoma
Obstacles • Lack of a camp registry database in the State of NJ • Information dissemination to Youth Camps that are not ACA certified • Huge number of camps to administer information
Draft Bill Proposal • Goal: Require Camp Directors to educate the Youth Summer Camp Staff on Prevention, Detection and Screening of melanoma through techniques to include, but not limited to, frequency of use of sunblock, hats where practical, sun protective clothing, sunglasses and use of shaded areas. • Pamphlet sent out with annual registrations to all Youth Summer camp Directors.
