  5. SAND • Sand is made from weathered rocks, mostly quartz • Sand is made up of large grains • Sand is very coarse • Sand is usually light in color

  6. CLAY • Clay comes from weathered rock too! • Usually from a rock called feldspar • Clay has very, very tiny grains • Clay is very soft • Clay sticks together easily • Clay can be different colors

  7. HUMUS • Humus is the name for the organic material in soil (like decaying leaves and twigs) • It may have large and small pieces of dead plants and animals • Fungi and earthworms help break down dead matter into humus • It is very good for growing plants
