  1. Milton Marlin Swim Team Parent Information Night

  2. The Coaching Model • A coaching model is an integral part of setting standards and guidelines for Coaches to apply their knowledge to achieve desired program outcomes. • A Coaching model aims to: • Develop superior stroke technique • Improve cardiovascular fitness to lay foundation for future success • Maintain or improve natural speed • Gradually develop body strength and flexibility

  3. The Coaching Model • Three elements exist in a Coaching Model: • The Mechanical Model • The Physiological Model • The Psychological Model and Individual Well-Being

  4. The Mechanical Model • Freestyle • Hackett, Pellegrini • Sullivan, Hayden, Trickett • Backstroke • Lochte, Peirsol • Breastroke • Kitijima, Jones • Butterfly • Phelps, Schipper

  5. The Mechanical Model Think Technique Teach Technique, and… Practice Technique

  6. The Physiological Model • Training principles include: • Training Overload • Specificity • Recovery • These principles help the coach Predict responses to Training stimulus

  7. The Physiological Model • Too diverse a training plan fails to stimulate optimal adaptation responses • Therefore… Sequencing of Training stimuli is critical, eg Periodisation • Periodisation involves sequencing High and Low stress workouts • High Stress = more recovery time • Low Stress = less recovery time Note: Individual responses vary!

  8. The Physiological Model • When Preparing for major competitions, athlete’s require a Taper • Taper – A reduction in training stress (following a ‘Period’) which encourages recovery and stimulates adaptation Swim Ontario Video on Taper by Dean Boles & Greg Wells http://swimontario.com/index_cc.php?id=1634

  9. The Physiological Model No single type of training satisfies all our requirements. Therefore, our physiological model must accommodate a number of general as well as specific performance outcomes.

  10. The Physiological Model • Long Term Athlete Development • Active start 5. Training to Compete • FUNdamentals 6. Training to Win • Learning to Train 7. Active for Life • Training to Train • SNC- https://www.swimming.ca/ltad • CS4L- http://www.canadiansportforlife.ca/

  12. What Effects the Performance of Girls?

  13. What Effects the Performance of Boys?

  14. The Psychological Model and Individual Well-Being • Common reasons why individuals participate in competitive sports • Enjoyment of the sport • Desire to improve and learn new skills • Desire to perform at ones best • Basic coaching strategies • Positive reinforcement • Developing Confidence • Focus on Process, not Outcome

  15. The Psychological Model and Individual Well- Being • Effective mental skills to master: • Goal setting - Use of imagery • Emotional control - Concentration

  16. The Psychological Model and Individual Well- Being A healthy concept of SELF, both within and outside the sporting environment, supports one’s sporting aspirations.

  17. Planning • State of maturation influences the application of the overall model • Planning must fit into the athletes education or career plans • Interpretation of the conceptual models must remain flexible • Models evolve as a result of coach experience and education

  18. Season Plan • Based on the SO and SNC LTADS • Allows for rest at key times during the season • Allows swimmers to compete at an appropriate level

  21. Some Terminology - FINA Points • The FINA Point Scoring allows comparisons of results among different events. The FINA Point Scoring assigns point values to swimming performances, more points for world class performances typically 1000 or more and fewer points for slower performances. Point values are assigned every year. http://www.fina.org/pool/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7236&Itemid=297

  22. What can you do for the Coach? • Be informed on: • Nutrition • How much and what type of food? • Recovery requirements and techniques • Massage, Stretching, Sleep • Supportive of the Coaching Team

  23. Conclusion • Coaching breakthrough’s occur as a consequence of thinking and planning years ahead. “We need to coach the way swimming will be in 10 years time. Even the best coaching practices of today may not be enough to produce the champions of tomorrow” Bill Sweetenham

  24. Frequently Asked Questions • Why are swimmer levels based on age and not level of ability? • How do they advance to the next level? • How are events chosen for swimmers at a meet? • Why don’t swimmers rest/taper for every meet? • How does a coach ensure each swimmer is coached equally? • How can a parent find out the Coaches opinion on their child's skill, work ethic, talent, advancement opportunities, etc? • Should MMST provide Team travel for away meets? Eg. bus. • Should MMST compete in more or less swim meets per season?
