Publication year Author’s last name Hewett, B. L. (2010). The online writing conference: A guide for teachers and tutors. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann. (Hewett, 2010) According to Hewett (2010)…
Parenthetical vs. In-Sentence Citations • Online writing tutors should ensure they use an appropriate tone when giving feedback to students (Hewett, 2010). • As Hewett (2010) explained, online writing tutors should ensure they use an appropriate tone when giving feedback to students.
Publication Year Rules Always include the publication year for the first in-text citation of a source. You may eliminate publication year in any subsequent in-text citations. • This rule starts over in each new paragraph. • Parenthetical citations ALWAYS include the year.
Many students are new to online education. Because of this, Hewett (2010) suggested that online tutors should be especially careful with the tone of their feedback. One way Hewett noted that tutors can improve their tone is by extensive training before working with students. Managers should be careful to ensure tutors receive training as they gain more experience, too (Hewett, 2010). In practice, then, tutor training becomes an important aspect of an online Writing Center’s development of tutors.
