Radiation • Conduction • Convection • Hydrosphere • Condensation Key Vocabulary Words
Quick Write On your index card: What have you previously learned about energy? You have 1 minute to quickly write everything that you know! Turn and Talk Share your response to your shoulder partner. Let’s Connect…Activator
Before we get started, let’s label our 4 tab foldable flipbook! GraphicOrganizer
Let’s read Energy from the Sun on Page 305 Let’s Connect… The Sun provides most of Earth’s energy. This energy drives winds and ocean currents and allows plants to grow and produce food, providing nutrition for many animals. Energy from the Sun
Heat - Page 305 Heat Heat is energy that flows from an object with a higher temperature to an object with a lower temperature. Heat is transferred through the atmosphere in 3 ways. Teaching
… you feel the Sun’s warmth on your face. How can you feel the Sun’s heat even though you aren’t in direct contact with it? Imagine you are sitting on the beach…
Radiation - Page 306 Radiation • Radiation is energy that is transferred in the form of rays or waves. • In other words, the transfer of energy through empty space. Teaching
Summarize how the Sun warms your skin? Be specific with your responses. Do not put your name on your paper! Write down the answer to the question on your piece of paper. Wad it up into a snowball and toss your snowball into the basket. Each of you will grab a snowball from the basket and look at the answer. If the answer is correct, you may have a seat. Snowball fight!
Hypothesize why your feet heat up when you walk barefoot on the beach? Let’s imagine that you are still at the beach!
Conduction - Page 306 Conduction • Conduction is the transfer of energy that occurs when molecules bump into one another. • Transfer of thermal energy by direct contact. Teaching
Convection - Page 306 Convection • Convection is the transfer of heat by the flow of material. • Transfer of thermal energy through liquid or gas. • Convection circulates heat throughout the atmosphere. Teaching
Convection - Page 307 When air is warmed, the molecules move apart and the air becomes less dense. (molecules move faster) In cold air, molecules move closer together. The air becomes more dense and air pressure increases. Think of it like an equation: Warmer, less dense air rises + Cooler, denser air sinks = Convection Currents Teaching
Next to each description, write the method of heating that is taking place. Cite evidence for each response. Feel the Heat Activity
Convection Radiation Conduction
On the back of your index card: Create an illustration of a real life scenario to represent two types of heat transfer. Be sure NOT to write down the name of your heat transfer. Time to share Share your illustrations with your partner and see if they are able to identify the types of heat transfer that you chose. Think-Ink-Share
Identify the illustration above. How does the Sun’s energy influence this illustration?
Earth’s Unique Atmosphere - Page 308 Why doesn’t life exist on Mars or Venus? Mars is a cold, lifeless world because it’s atmosphere is too thin to support life or to hold in the heat. Venus has a dense atmosphere with gases that trap heat from the Sun. (470 degrees Celsius) Teaching
3 types of heat transfer • 2 examples of how heat is transferred • 1 direction energy flows Summarizer
