French “Civil Wars of Religion” Context & Course • What was the political and religious background to France prior to 1550’s? • French Civil Wars of Religion Overview (1559-1598) • 1559 Crucial Year (Cateau-Cambresis, Henry II) • Valois Boy Kings (Francis II, Charles IX, Henry III) • During Charles IX reign (1560-1574) it begins • Four Civil Wars (1562-63, 1567-68, 1568-70, 1572-73) • What was the nature of these wars (who, treaties, edicts)? • What was the essential problem? • St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (August 1572) Case Study • Answer the above two questions by looking at why this happened, what happened, what the result was

Thirty Years’ War • What was the political, social, economic, and religious background to the Thirty Years War? (i.e. identify 4-5 developments in the H.R.E. prior to the 17th century) • Complete a chart on the Thirty Years War: causes, events (break down into phases), results.
Military Revolution Research • Working with a partner research how military organization, tactics, and technology had changed during the 16th and early 17th centuries • Research changes in military structure, tactics/strategy, and technology (sample questions to answer): • How were armies organized? What was the command structure? • What was the military technology used? Weapons, transportation? • What were the tactics/strategies employed by armies? • Research one battle from either the Revolt of the Netherlands, French Civil Wars of Religion, or Thirty Years War and explain how that battle shows these developments • Summary/analysis of research should be 1 page in length and can either be a word document, powerpoint, or Photostory.
