Plato’s Allegory of the Cave Unit 4: Obligations within Society
What is philosophy? • You live your life according to ideas and assumptions about what the world is like – that’s your philosophy • The word means “love of wisdom” • What is wisdom?
Why do you think we study philosophy? • The unexamined life is not worth living. (Socrates 400 BC) • Free men need liberal education to prepare them to make a good use of their freedom. (John Dewey, 1916 AD) • Know yourself. (Plato 387 BC)
What is an allegory? • An Allegory is a form of extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative, are equated with the meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. • The underlying meaning has moral, social, religious, or political significance, and characters are often personifications of abstract ideas as charity, greed, or envy. • Thus an allegory is a story with two meanings, a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning.
