Before we meet the participle… • Let’s review adjectives,nouns,andverbs • A noun is a person, place, or thing, or sometimes an idea • Examples of nouns: cat, book, happiness, California • An adjective is a word that describes a noun. • Examples: • All of my students are very smart. • The purple and bluehydrangeas are my favoriteflowers. • A verb is either an action word, or a state of being word • Examples of action verbs: • Jump, scream, run, laugh, dance • Examples of state of being verbs: • am, is, are, was, were
Introducing the Participle! • definition: a verb ending in “-ing”, “ed” or “en” yet used as an adjective; it is placed BEFORE the noun it describes. • Examples: Bakedbrownies (verb: bake) Jumpingrabbits (verb: jump) Glazeddonuts (verb: glaze) Excitedstudents (verb: excite)
Participle Practice Directions: • Read the following sentences • Write down the participle phrases and underline the participle. • Then, draw an arrow to the noun the participle is describing.
