Tuesdays With Morrie • Mitch, the story’s narrator, recalls his graduation from Brandeis University in the spring of 1979. After receiving his diploma, Mitch presents his favorite professor, Morrie Schwartz, with a monogrammed briefcase. Mitch promises to keep in touch with Morrie over the years, but is unable to keep his promise.
Plot Summary Continued • Mitch, a failed musician, becomes unsatisfied with life and decides to take a well-paying job as a journalist even though he is not happy. One night Mitch recognizes the voice of his former professor, Morrie, on television. Morrie is being interviewed by Ted Koppel on the show “Nightline.”
Summary • Morrie is discussing his disease with Koppel. • Morrie had recently been diagnosed with ALS and was nearing the end of his life. • Mitch decides to reconnect with his old professor, and gains much more than a friendship. • The story follows a series of Tuesdays where Mitch and Morrie meet at Morrie’s home to discuss life in general. Morrie provides Mitch with invaluable insight on life and provides his views on the meaning of life.
