Flashback • noun – a part of a story or movie that describes or shows something that happened in the past. • a strong memory of a past event that comes suddenly into a person’s mind. • In Tuesdays with Morrie, the many flashbacks are set in italic type to help the reader identify them.
Memoir • A written account in which someone (such as a famous performer or politician)describes past experiences • A written account of someone or something that is usually based on personal knowledge of the subject • A narrative composed of personal experience
Literary Nonfiction • Literary, or creative, nonfiction uses the techniques of fiction writers to present nonfiction in a “compelling, vivid, dramatic manner”. • “true stories well told”
Creative Nonfiction • In some ways, creative nonfiction is like jazz—it’s a rich mix of flavors, ideas, and techniques, some of which are newly invented and others as old as writing itself. Creative nonfiction can be an essay, a journal article, a research paper, a memoir, or a poem; it can be personal or not, or it can be all of these.
