  2. WHAT STARTED THE WAR? • US believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction • UN didn’t find any of these weapons • US produced evidence that Saddam Hussein was moving the weapons to different areas in Iraq • March 2003, President George W. Bush and our allies decided to send troops into Iraq

TIMELINE OF THE IRAQ WAR • MARCH 19, 2003-Bush launches invasion of Iraq • APRIL 9, 2003-Saddam statue toppled • APRIL 16, 2003-Bush signs $79 billion supplemental spending bill for Iraq • MAY 1, 2003-MISSION ACCOMPLISHED-”My fellow Americans: major combat operations in Iraq have ended” Pres. Bush

TIMELINE CONTD. • DECEMBER 14, 2003: Saddam is captured • JUNE 28, 2004: US transfers sovereignty to Iraq. • OCTOBER 7, 2004: Deulfer Report: Iraq did not have WMD (weapons of mass destruction) • JANUARY 12, 2005: search in Iraq is declared over • JANUARY 20, 2005: Iraqis vote to form a Transitional National Assembly • OCTOBER 15, 2005:Iraqis vote to ratify draft constitution.

  5. TIMELINE CONTD. • APRIL 21, 2006: Jawad al-Maliki (Shiite) is chosen as prime minister • NOVEMBER 5, 2006: Saddam sentenced to death by hanging for crimes against humanity (1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the city of Dujail.) • DECEMBER 30, 2006: Saddam executed.

Persian Gulf War:Operation Desert Storm • August 2, 1990 Saddam Hussein sent his army to take over Kuwait. • Kuwait is oil-rich and Iraq had very little money after it’s long war with Iran • 1991 US joined other nations in a coalition to push Iraqis out of Kuwait. • February 28,1991 war is over
