Background • 1945:Soviets invade Korea U.S. follows Japan surrenders • Korea divided 38th parallel (38 degrees above equator) • 1948: Two Governments • North: Democratic People’s Republic (Soviet Union) • South: Republic of Korea (United States) • 1949: U.S. cuts back forces- only 500 troops • 1950: • North Korea attacks- June 25 • South Korea calls on U.N. Soviet boycott • U.S. troops ordered in- June 30

  5. UN Security Council Composed of: U.S., Soviet Union, Taiwan, and 8 other nations Purpose: maintain international peace and security. Nations supposed to comply to pass resolution May veto resolution only if present

  6. Situation in China • Government ruled by Chiang Kai-Shek and Nationalists until 1949- U.S. Aid after WWII • Taken over by Communist Party- Mao Zedong • Nationalists flee to Taiwan • Containment a failure? Chiang Kai- shek Mao Zedong

Pravda- June 27th, 1950 "Truman's statement and actions, unprecedented in the international relations of the post-war period, are just one more indication that the American ruling circles no longer limit themselves to preparation for aggression, but have gone over to direct acts of aggression… As is known, neither the United Nations nor any other international organ empowered the government of the USA to take those actions related to Korea and China that Truman announced yesterday. Undertaking their open aggressive act, the American government apparently intended to present the United Nations with a fait accompli."
