The Northern Renaissance • The monarchs of England & France were strong patrons of the arts • Italian ideas mingled with northern traditions and developed their own distinct characteristics • Artists were especially interested in realism • The idea of human dignity caused many northern humanists to plan a social reform based on Judeo-Christian values

  5. Francis I of France • Invited da Vinci to retire in France • Hired Italian artists and architects to rebuild and redecorate Fontainebleau castle

  6. Fontainebleau • Became a showcase for Renaissance art

  7. Albrecht Durer • Famous German Painter • Studied in Italy 1494 • Returned to Germany to do woodcuts and engravings • Subjects: religious, classical myths, realistic landscapes • Influenced other Germans

  8. Flemish Painters • From Flanders • Today is part of France and the Netherlands • Artists were supported by a wealthy merchant class

  9. Jan van Eyck • Flemish artist • Used oil-based paints to develop techniques that painters still use • Used a layering technique that created subtle colors • Ideas spread to Italy & around Northern Europe

  10. Pieter Bruegel • Focused on realism & individuality • Skillful in portraying crowds • Portrayed everyday Peasant life, with a sense of life and feeling
