The Day afteryou say “I do” How to increase your job / position success! Sherri Funk BBA, MSHRM, MAEd, MTE, AFC
How we got here: • You went to a couple of functions • You volunteered to help with a job • You did a great job helping • You were recommended or known from another location
The courtship • Would you like to sit in on a meeting? • Would you help on this committee? • How about lunch with us while we discuss the upcoming year? • Wine and food, and more wine!
Think about it…. • Would you consider doing this job next year? • It’ll be fun! • It won’t take that much of your time…
My guide to success in your new position: • Start Digging!
In Person: • Meet with the person who had the job • Meet with the Executive Board POC • Meet with the President
Who’s been doing the job? • Find out all you can from that person on: • The position/job • What they thought the job entailed • How much time it took them • What would they change • What they disliked about the position • What was the best thing about doing it
READ everything! • Find all the old minutes, notes, after action reports, standard operating procedures and read them. Get a lay of the land for what the job was before and what is expected now. • This will also help you to understand the overall organization - where it’s been and where the vision for growth is.
Position + poc = synergy • Usually, each position in a Private Organization (PO) has a corresponding Point of Contact (POC) on the “Executive” Board. • Talk with your POC! • Find out what they think your job is about. • What are they’re expectations for you in doing this job? • What do they think it will take for you to be successful in your new job/position? • Once you have this information – you can work towards mutual success!
Hug the president! • Seriously, give him or her a hug. That is a tough position and you two need to be working together ALL THE TIME. • Now, find out what the President knows and expects of you and your job. Communication is the key to success in working with the person in charge of your PO. If you can handle it, tell them. If you need help, let them know. Don’t try and do it all on your own.
So now you know… • Gather your thoughts… • Write down your goals and objectives for the position/job and the year. • Determine a way to get from here, the beginning, to the there, the end of the year.
So now you know… • “Due-ables” • Keep track of your “due-ables” - • what’s due from you and when. • Put all the dates on your calendar – • for the whole year. • Put all your due-ableson your calendar – for the whole year.
Work ahead…. • Don’t wait for the year to start, start thinking and working on your Due-able List.
You can do it! • As you start marking off the things you need to accomplish for your job, you will see that you can do this job, and do it well…with a little planning and organization!
