When is a death investigated? • A death must be investigated when: • It is a violent death (homicide, suicide, accident) • The death is suspicious • The death is sudden or unexpected • The victim is under age 6 years • The death occurs in prison or Police custody • The death occurs without a Doctor present • The death involves a Public Hazard
The Basic Questions of the Investigation: • Who? (Identify the victim) • When? (Time of death / injury) • Where? (The scene of the death or injury) • What? (What happened? What is the cause of death?) • Which? (Injuries are significant?) • Why? (And how were the injuries produced? How did the death occur?)
Who are some of the Professionals who might use this knowledge? • Some doctors become Forensic Pathologists or Coroners. • Some Registered Nurses become Forensic Nurses • Some Scientists become Forensic Pathologist… • Some become Crime Scene Investigators • Some Psychologist become Profilers
What is required? • All require a college degree • All require specialty school training • All require some license or certification • Some require Advanced Degrees (Masters or Doctoral degrees, Medical degree, etc)
