Smart English:Real topics for CLIL and exams Anna Whitcher Brookemead ELT London & San Francisco
The beginning • Forming ideas and topics with main author Rebecca Robb Benne. • Asking basic questions and pushing them further. • Keeping exams in mind and making it real.
Basic questions we asked • Who is our audience? • What interests them? • What does their world look like?
Further questions asked • How do we build upon what’s already in their world? • What are the important elements? • How can we apply these elements to their learning of English?
The five elements of Smart English • Real lives • Real voices • Real topics • Real video • Real skills
Real skills • Four skills with an emphasis on speaking • Communication strategies • Language chunks
10 steps in each unit 1 The Big Question 2 Vocabulary 3 Listening 4 Role play 5 Reading 6 Grammar 7 Conversation 8 CLIL 9 Writing 10 Your answer
CLIL in Smart English • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) or content teaching • Topics that interest students (genetics, street art, moods, animation, the music industry, etc.)
Challenges with CLIL • For teachers, having enough background knowledge in a subject area • For lower level classes, selecting topics that aren’t too vocabulary intensive • For students, avoiding frustration if they are not able to express their knowledge of the subject
How do we meet the CLIL challenge? • Choose topics that we as teachers feel moderately comfortable with • Encourage students to select topics that are of genuine interest to them • Find and use a variety of materials (print, online, realia) to support the topics
How the videos work with CLIL • Add visual support to illustrate the topic • Make unfamiliar or taboo topics real to students and teachers • Use real students when possible to discuss the topic and give examples
CLIL topics in Part B • Ecotourism (Zoology) • Phobias (Psychology) • Bank accounts (Economics) • Water and the body (Physiology) • Gravity (Physics)
Smart English and exams • Trinity G3 and G4 (Graded Examinations in Spoken English) • Cambridge KET (Key English Test)
