Introduction • The demand for distance education is increasing in the present world scenario • There must be a rapid hike in quality to meet the new challenges in this field • School of Distance Education was established by Kannur University in the year 2002 • with the objective of providing opportunities to the learners from Kasargod, Kannur and Wayand districts • Large Geographical area remains the main blockade for the students of Kannur University

Objective • “Effective Learning for All, Anywhere and Anytime”. • To promote distance education in rural and remote areas/ • To develop an interactive online e learning system for students of SDE • To extend the e- enabled system to students as well as teaching community • To conduct online test and evaluation

Justification of the Project • aim of this proposed system is “Effective Learning for All, Anywhere and Anytime” • focuses on the development of an interactive online portal incorporating various research areas like • Natural Language processing • Speech Recognition and • Image processing • to promote and spread distance leaning in remote rural areas • project is planned with the intention of total uplift of the urban as well as rural society which comes under the jurisdiction of the Kannur University.

Exclusive and Interactive Online Portal • SDE needs a highly sophisticated and interactive online portal. • This online portal will act as main resource provider for the students. • The interactive web portal will have the facilities of providing all information about SDE • It will also provide the study materials(Self Instructional Material-SIM) and online lectures. • The students can attend classes from their own locality/home. • Students can either attend the classes from their home or any six e- class rooms of Kannur University <<Back

Setting up six E-Class Rooms • Kannur University is a multi-campus university with Campuses located at various places under its jurisdiction. • The proposed research project aims to Establish smart rooms or e- class rooms(e-PCP centres) at • Mangattuparamba, • Palayad, • Payyanur, • Nileshwar, • Mananthavady • Kasaragod

Contd. • These class rooms will provide video conferencing facility for students, teachers, administrative staff and general public. • the students can attend classes and other academics can interact with the eminent scholars of various campuses and experts in the respective field. • Each smart room will be attached with a computer lab also. • The students can attend the classes as per course schedule provided on the website. • This facility can be extended to other institutions in the future. <<Back

Voice Enabled Alert System • a voice enabled alert system for the registered candidates/ users of this system. • Usually the students of SDE may be busy with their own jobs. • They may not be the regular visitors of the SDE online portal. • They can be alerted through their mobile phones using text/voice message • This module of the proposed project will intimate the students/ users about their particular field of study <<Back

Online Question Answering System • The proposed system will also focus in developing a Question Answering System. • A on- Line Guru- to answer the Queries of Students • Various aspects of natural language processing will be used. • This system will be based on particular domain • Explore out the possibilities of an Effective Human computer interaction <<Back

Document Image Processing System • Keeping the documents for a long time without any loss of data is a tremendous task. • The processing these documents is also a time consuming job as the number of documents increases • A computerized document processing system will help to get the information within no time. • storage of this huge amount of data is also secured. • Documents generated in SDE can be stored and processed by developing a document image processing system. <<Back

Schools on Wheels • The students of Distance education programmes mostly hail from the outskirts of Kasargod, Kannur and Wayand districts • This cause main difficulty in providing and accessing quality education • a mobile unit of SDE will reach the outskirts of the three districts based on a programme. • This will be used as OB (Outside Broadcasting ) Van for broadcasting the classes and the programmes of SDE <<Back
