Solid State Oxide Fluorides Kenneth R. Poeppelmeier, Northwestern University, DMR 1005827 The floating zone furnace (shown below at left) is used to grow large crystals needed for property measurement and applications (eg SHG active materials for photonic technologies). A single crystal of Cu2O measuring 1 cm in diameter and 4 cm long is shown at right. Single crystals of Cu2O allow analysis of 3rd harmonic generation (shown below) and exciton behavior. Solid State Oxide Fluorides Kenneth R. Poeppelmeier, Northwestern University, DMR 1005827 Broader Impacts • Science outreach to the community • mentoring high school research • Science In The Classroom - science outreach program for 3rd and 4th grade classes at a local elementary school • Designing and developing curricula through the Graduate Teaching Certificate Program at Northwestern’s Searle Center for Teaching Excellence. • Integrating solid state research techniques and modern experiments into the Chemistry department’s new curriculum for the chemistry major. • Involving women and minorities into the interdisciplinary approach of the group which includes strong collaborations with chemists, engineers, and physicists. • Mentoring undergraduate researchers on independent projects that prepare them for graduate study or careers in industry.
