Weather and Climate Evidence for and against climate change Is global warming really happening? Possible causes of global warming World and UK temperatures for the last 100 and 1000 years
Is our climate changing? This graph shows the re-constructed global temperature over the last 2000 years. It has been done using different measures e.g. records, ice cores, tree rings and pollen Scientist and Geographers know the climate has been changing in the past because Britain has had several periods of glaciation but also times when the climate has been warmer and colder than average. The Little Ice Age (1550 – 1750) and the Medieval Warm Period are evidence of smaller fluctuations in our climate that happened before cars and power stations began pumping tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere.
Over the last century there have been significant changes … Since 1850 measurements of global temperature have been done using thermometers giving us the most accurate information about climate change. Average global temperatures have risen by 0.74ºC during the last 100 years and 0.5 ºC since 1980! Q1. Describe the trend of Global Air temperature between 1850 and 2010 (4) Q2. Why are scientists increasingly confident in the data they have about global climate change?
More evidence for Climate Change…. Q3. Read page 67 and make brief notes under the headings to explain how different sources suggest the climate is changing
Natural vs. Human • Some scientists think that the warming of global temperatures is natural response to the end of the last glacial period. They argue that similar temperature patterns have been recorded over millions of years. They also claim climate shifts are linked to shifts in the Earth’s axis and orbit. • Other scientists do not accept that the warming we are experiencing is natural. They blame humans for burning fossil fuels and causing the Greenhouse Effect Q4. Read page 68 and explain briefly the natural and human causes of Climate Change. Q5. Complete Q2 from page 69 to show the causes of the Greenhouse Effect
Positive and Negative Effects of Global Warming • Look at the diagram on page 70 which shows the possible effects of Global Warming. • Positives are shown in orange and negatives in yellow • Read this information and copy at least five positives and five negatives onto a map of the UK – title ‘Possible effects of global warming’
