Chapter 67 Polymers: Synthesis of Nylon by Interfacial Polymerization
Purpose • In this experiment a 10-carbon diacid is converted to the corresponding diacid chloride with thionyl chloride. The diacid chloride product is then reacted with 6-carbon diamine in a biphasic system. Where the solutions come in contact, nylon 6.10 is formed.
Comments • Follow pp. 818-820(microscale). • Follow the lab handout for all experimental procedures. Wearing rubber gloves is necessary during this lab. You will work with toxic and corrosive compounds. • Calculate yield. Moderate to good yields should be achieved. (Moles Product / Moles Starting Material) x 100 = % Yield
Safety • 1,6-Hexanediamine is harmful by contact with skin and if swallowed and causes burns. Also is irritating to respiratory system.Do not swallow and inhale dust. Wear gloves and eye protection. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. • Thionyl chloride is harmful by inhalation and if swallowed; causes severe burns. Contact with water liberates toxic gas (SO2). Do not swallow, do not inhale and avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wear protective gloves and goggles.
