Proposal • Do Algebra 1 students need to take a whole year of Algebra 1? • Currently they do, if they score under 70% on the Algebra Proficiency Exam. Based on research, students could master their weak areas in Algebra and move on. Consider Kahn Academy’s Method of mastery before advancement. Research has shown that students using Cognitive Tutor Algebra I: Demonstrate an 85% better performance on assessments of complex mathematical problem solving and thinking Have a 70% greater likelihood of completing subsequent Geometry and Algebra II courses Achieve 15-25% better scores on the SAT and Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test
Current Conditions • EHS Admits 165 Freshmen each year. • 1/3 Will re-take Algebra 1 • Another 1/3 will need some remedial study from Algebra1’s curriculum. • EHS has teachers for a Mastery of Algebra class. • EHS has Rooms and Scheduled time. • We have the talent to develop the course.
Framework for Success • Collect data • Compare curriculum concepts • Develop a Course Framework • Math Dept. Presents to the Academic Governance Committee. • The Head of School reviews • We plan for Day 1 • Review at end of first year • Revise, Repeat or Reject
