Background Information Egypt is a country in the north-east corner of Africa. Its greatest resource is the Nile River Valley where there is fertile soil. The national government has several important parts: the president, prime minister, People's Assembly (Majilis al-Shab) and the Shura Council. The People's Assembly makes decisions about Egypt's laws and the Shura Council gives advice to the president and the Assembly. Egypt has a history of being ruled by different empires and countries. The last foreign power in Egypt was Great Britain until complete freedom was gained in 1952. This past January, another revolution occurred which is now called the 25 January Revolution. Through protests, the Egyptian president of 30 years, President Hosni Mubarak, was overthrown. Currently, Parliament doesn't exist and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces are working to rewrite a constitution that limits the president's term to only 4 years. The first Parliamentary elections were held at the end of November 2011 Most of Egypt's money comes from fees for usage of the Suez Canal, agriculture, and tourism.
Conclusion I think that after gaining freedom from Great Britain, Egypt started growing and becoming a healthier country during the 1920s and 1950s. An interesting data I found was that as the number of children per woman decreased, the GDP/capita started to increase. This shows that as people became healthier, women didn't have to have as many children, which then allowed for them to actually get richer. The population growth has stayed consistently +2% from 1960 to 2010. This is a picture overlooking the capital city of Cairo.
