  2. When did the Civil War occur? • The Civil War began April 12, 1861 • It ended April 9, 1865

  3. Who was involved in the Civil War? • The Union (north) and the Confederacy (south) • Union-Dark blue • Confederacy-Red • Border states- Light Blue

  4. Border States in the Civil War • Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Marylandliked slavery but didn’t want to become a separate nation.

  5. The Union states in the Civil War • The Union states were: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas, Oregon, and California.

  6. The Confederate States In the Civil War • The Confederate states were: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, and Texas.

  7. What alliances were formed in the Civil War? • The Confederacy need land from five Indian nations that had a vast supply of beef, grain, horses, lead and salt. The Cherokee split on deciding if they should join the confederacy or not. The other 4 nations willingly signed treaties on the condition that the annuities and protection would be forthcoming.

  8. Who were the leaders for the Union? • The Union president was Abraham Lincoln. • Ulysses S. Grant was the Union General. • General William T. Sherman • John Brown

  9. Who were the leaders for the Confederacy? • The president of the Confederacy was Jefferson Davis. • The Confederate General was Robert E. Lee. • General Stonewall Jackson

  10. What were the main events/battles in the Civil War? • Fort Sumter began the civil war. • 1st battle of bull run • 2nd battle of bull run • Battle of Gettysburg • Battle of Appomattox Courthouse

  11. What were the main weapons used during the Civil War? • Civil War Muskets- used by both sides. • Civil War Rifles-Like the Sharps Rifle, the Spencer Rifle, and the Henry Rifle. • There were also pistols used. • Civil War Cannons- only caused 5% of casualties on both sides. • Swords

  12. What were the main vehicles used during the Civil War? • Horses- Used by the generals and other important people. • Railroads • Waking- people would just walk everywhere

  13. How does the Civil War affect America’s future? • It made slavery illegal and if we didn’t have the war we might still have slavery. • The south would have become the Confederate States of America and not the United States of America. • Made friends and families go against each other.

  14. How many people joined and died? • Over 3 million people fought in the war. • There were 620,000 deaths in the Civil War. That was 2% of the population. • 300 women disguised themselves as men and fought. 2,000 boys under 14 fought, hundreds under 13. there were 200,000 boys no older than 16 that fought in the war.

  15. How does the civil war end? • The Civil War ended with a surrender of the Confederacy. • Many had been injured and even more died. The southern landscape was devastated.
