  2. The last meeting for the WG2… • This is the last meeting of the IATF that the WG2 is participating in its current form. • The WG2 has been in operation for about two years. • [Reports available through WG2 website]

  3. With its web site WG2 has created a web portal for the exchange of early warning information. www.unisdr.org/unisdr/WGroup2.html  Develop and implement a web portal for Early Warning.  Produce and disseminate information material to raise awareness of early warning… WG2 Output: Early Warning Portal

  4.  List capacities… for early warning… and examples of their application.  Identify weaknesses and strengthen existing early warning systems. Output: Online Inventory for Early Warning Systems • Programming of questionnaire, data base, and web based user interface. • Data acquisition through electronic poll. • Advertising brochure. • Electronic circular for the promotion of the Inventory.

  5. Output: Early Warning Conference II • WG2 chaired the Advisory Group and contributed substantially to the preparation of the Regional Consultations and the conference itself. • Members of the WG2 participated in the Advisory Group, chaired sessions at the EWC II and participated in the drafting group.

  6. Output: Early Warning Conference II • Documents authored: • Guidelines for the Regional Consultations • National level policy briefing for the implementation of EW into public policy • Local level policy briefing for the implementation of EW into public policy • Draft for “Targets and Benchmarks 2004-2015” for the EW process

  7. Output: Early Warning Conference II • Other contributions: • Initiation of the preparatory process for the Africa Regional Consultation (handed over to the ISDR/UNEP Outreach Africa) • Support of the drafting and revision of the conference agenda • Contributions to the selection of abstracts

  8.  List scientific and technical issues related to EW and … that are relevant to policy makers.  Identify weaknesses and strengthen existing early warning systems. Output: Early Warning Conference II • Contributions to the selection of speakers. • Contributions to the conference by means of speeches and supporting roles.

  9. Output: Co-operation with WG3 • WG2 is co-operating in WG3’s project on the compilation of urban Vulnerability Assessment Tools and the drafting of guidelines for such tools. • Sharing of electronic questionnaire programmed for the WG2’s EWS Inventory. • Comments on project proposal The project is spearheaded by UN HABITAT

  10.  List ….capacities for Early Warning…and examples of their application.  Identify weaknesses and strengthen existing early warning systems.  Develop inventories of available and accessible data sets, methods, tools… for EW and environmental vulnerability. Output: Co-operation with WG3

The future... • The experience and expertise of WG2 should be preserved and made available to the EW international process  Re-assemble members of the WG2 as part of an “Advisory Group” for the newly planned International Early Warning Platform.  Since Early Warning has been made a focus area of disaster reduction and sustainable development in general, a new working group(s) with new Terms of Reference could be formed.
