Inventory of EW systems Why an inventory of EW systems…? • Provide an overview and understanding of existing early warning systems • Help decision makers to find existing EW systems for their specific needs • Build the basis for an assessment of EW systems by means of indicators • Avoid future redundancies
Data acquisition • 1st -test- version of questionnaire is electronic and has been sent out to 10 agencies • Questionnaire might have to be revised • Final version will be an on-line template that will fill the data base automatically
User interface of the inventory 5 Screens: • Entry through search engine with four criteria: hazard, region, organisation, warning year. • Search results. • EWS screen with basic information and links to the method of the EWS and to the warning dissemination. • Method screen. • Information on Warning Dissemination screen.

Criteria for indicators... • Determine criteria to assess efficiency • Develop indicators for those criteria • Develop a method to assess efficiency of EW systems by means of indicators • Lessons learnt – Floods in Central Europe 2002; floods in China, 2002; current drought in Southern Africa... • Best practices/”blue prints” for EW systems • Relevant information for donors and bilateral organisations

EWC II • WG2 was requested to develop a proposal reflecting the structure and organisation of the international conference • Small group within WG2 • 1st draft circulated back to WG2 members • Draft forwarded to ECW II Secretariat
The future... • Finalisation of inventory of EW systems- long term management (DKKV-UNEP- ISDR) • Criteria for indicators of effectiveness EWS- finalise and circulate draft proposal - convey expert meeting (2003)- process to validate indicators and produce guidelines • Continue support to preparation of EWC II • Next meeting of WG2?
