NLSI All-Hands Meeting September 2009 Andrew Poppe LASP / CU
Planetary Science Decadal Survey • PSDS commissioned approximately every 10 years • Charged with defining the broad scientific goals for the planetary science community for the next decade • NASA / NSF / Congress use the PSDS Report to make budgetary allocations • Community input through panel representation and white paper submission • Schedule • Work began Q4 2008 / Q1 2009 • Individual panels meet three times • Aug 09, Nov 09, Apr 10 • Report due out in early 2011 • Inner Planets Meeting in Boulder for April 2010!
Planetary Science Decadal Survey • Lunar science is covered under the Inner Planets Panel (Mercury, Venus & the Moon) • The Moon is currently in the best shape project-wise of the three bodies • Moon: Clementine (1994), LP (1999), LRO (2009), Chang’e-1 (2009), Chandrayaan (2009), LADEE (2012-14),ILN (2016-2020?) • Venus: Galileo flyby (1990), Magellan (1994), MESSENGER flyby (2008), Venus Express (ESA, 2009) • Mercury: Mariner (1968,1973), MESSENGER (2011) • Lots of competing interests between different communities • Three bodies are very distinct, sometimes hard to find common ground
