Takeaways • Call trees are very important for notifying staff of a situation • Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy • Landline phones play an important communications role following an extended power outage • Think in terms of upstream and downstream communication • Communication strategies should include high tech (smartphones, iPads) to no tech solutions (runners can be an important part of a strategy as they don’t require technology and provide face-to-face communication) • Situational reports can promote calming and demonstrate control of the situation • Daily usage of communication technology commonly used in disaster is important – just in time training good for tools not used daily, such as walkie talkies • Texting and email are the most reliable technology based means of communication during an IMD event • Don’t replace something that works
