The Characteristics and Needs of Life By: Brianna Shields October 2, 2004
DO NOW • 1. Identify the IV and DV: If I use a higher temperature then the food will cook faster. • 2. Is a rock living or nonliving? • 3. What is the smallest living unit or part in your body ? • Get your current event homework out- place it on your desk
GOAL • To determine the characteristics of life • To figure out what living things need to survive
Video • Write the statement below across the top of your notebook paper: • “ALL LIVING THINGS………….” • Watch the video and list all 9 common characteristics of living things
ALL LIVING THINGS……. • 1. Are made from same basic chemical ingredients • 2. Are composed of cells • 3. Require water & source of energy • 4. Have the ability to reproduce & grow • 5. Have limited lifespans • 6. Can respond to their surroundings • 7. Have the ability to move • 8. Are able to repair injuries • 9. Can change over time
Spontaneous Generation Theory 1600’s- life can spring from nonliving matter Redi’s experiment disproved this theory Where does life come from?
Redi’s Experiment 6 jars with meat 2 uncovered 2 sealed tightly w/ a lid 2 covered with netting Flies let into room What did they find????? Does rotten meat turn into maggots?
Redi’s Experiment All jars had rotten meat Flies entered jar one without lid and maggots covered meat Flies couldn’t penetrate lid on jar 2, therefore, no maggots Maggots crawling on net of jar 3 Does rotten meat turn into maggots?
Exp. Conclusion What is the conclusion to Redi’s Experiment? Living things will only come from the same kind of living thing Does rotten meat turn into maggots?
1. Made of Cells Cells only come from other cells Unicellular= 1 cell Multicellular= more than 1 cell Traits of Living Things
2. Can Move To find shelter Swim, run, slither, crawl, etc. (Even plants) Traits of Living Things
3. Metabolism All the breaking down and building up processes in the body Traits of Living Things
4. Digestion Breaking down food into small bits the cells can use Traits of Living Things
5. Respiration Combining oxygen and food for energy Traits of Living Things
6. Excretion Getting rid of waste materials Traits of Living Things
7. Grow and develop Grow larger Repair injuries Go through various life cycles Traits of Living Things
8. Can RESPOND to a STIMULUS Stimulus Signal/change in the environment Response Change in behavior (action) due to stimulus Traits of Living Things
9. Can change over time Species can adapt to the environment as it changes (rather than die) Traits of Living Things
10. Reproduce Organisms can grow and have offspring Asexual 1 parent Offspring are clones Sexual 2 parents Offspring look different from parents Traits of Living Things
1. Energy Sun --> plants --> animals- used for activities What do Living Things Need?
2. Food and water Energy and materials for growth and repair Living Things
3. Gases: oxygen, carbon dioxide Oxygen needed by animals Carbon dioxide needed by plants Living Things
4. Living Space Limited Leads to competition and territory protection Both animals & plants compete Living Things
5. Maintain homeostasis Ability of an organism to keep conditions inside body the same Ex: Maintain homeostasis of body temperature by sweating Living Things
Warmblooded Animals that maintain a constant body temperature Living Things
Coldblooded Animals body temperatures change with changes in the environment Living Things
Pyramid Assessment • 1. One word to describe how the body maintains balance • 2. Two types of reproduction • 3. Three things (substances) all living organisms need • 4. Four things all living organisms have in common • 5. Five things that are considered living
Describing a Living Thing: Chimpanzee • Unicellular • Can freely move about • Metabolism • Digestion- eat: • Respiration- breathe in oxygen, combines w/ food • Excretion- defecates, sweats • Grow and develop- injuries heal • Respond to stimuli- responds to communication from other chimps • Change over time- hands adapted for life in trees • Reproduce- sexually
Describing a Living Thing: Chimpanzee • Need energy • Food and water- eat: • Need gas- oxygen • Living space- habitat: trees • Maintain homeostasis: warmblooded, sweating
Homework • Write this assignment into your agenda: • “Living Things Worsheet”
