Who does it apply to “Registered health care professional who is entitled in accordance with the employers procedures to refer individuals for medical exposure…….” e.g. doctors, dentists, specific nurses
Protocols and Procedures In order to comply with the regulations the Trust has a number of protocols and procedures. The procedures describe courses of action e.g.Patient ID Referral process Reporting / Clinical evaluation Justification and Optimisation Protocols are established for each clinical examination and include Persons authorised to refer Booking procedure Clinical Indications Examination procedure

Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulation -IR(ME)R and The Royal College of Radiologists -Guidelines for Doctors Protocols/Procedures/Guidelines
Unless you have membership or fellowship of an appropriate Royal College or adequate training under IRMER you must not take responsibility for : Referrers / Practitioners / Operators Authorising the radiation exposure of any patient (as a “Practitioner")or For operating an x-ray set (as an “Operator")or Giving a radioactive injection (as an “Operator"). If you undertake any of the above you will be held personally responsible under this legislation.
BUT ……………… You can request most x-ray examinations i.e. Refer a patient for radiology or a radioactive injection. You are the “Referrer". Request for an opinion
Referring patients for x-ray or for a radioactive injection You do NOT need any training in uses of ionising radiation or in radiation protection You DO need to be identified by the employer as somebody entitled to refer patients for medical radiation exposure. As a "referrer" you MUST follow the employer’s procedures for referring patients. You MUST request the medical exposure using a protocol which will include the following information as a minimum …………
Unique patient ID Sufficient clinical information to enable the Practitioner to justify and then authorise the exposure on the basis of net benefit to the patient. Information (where relevant) on: L.M.P. Pregnancy Breast feeding Unique signature (hard copy or electronic) Clinical Evaluation - after each medical exposure the employer has to ensure that a radiological report is completed and documented.
