Background • In 2005, CIPHI identified the need for ongoing professional development as part of its 5 year strategic plan • Professional development model would need defined competencies • Mandatory membership identified as necessary for advancement of the profession
Challenges • Volunteer organization, executive • Perceived negativity around competencies and change • Invisible or foggy profession
Progress • Establishment of Strategic Directions and partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada • Program for Mandatory Professionalism • Establishment of core competencies • Mandatory Membership • Secured legal titles for CPHI(C) through Industry Canada • Changes to CIPHI’s constitution and legal challenges
This year… • Focus groups with practitioners and stakeholders across the country • Contracted Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (UK) to ensure competency statements aligned with international standards • Draft documents now available for public review • Regular members now required to participate in professional development program • “Council of Experience” established to govern professional development program
