What it does and what it does not do • The CPD system records training, education & personal development • It does not provide learning material
Why CPD? Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is about: • Keeping yourself up-to-date • Learning new skills and competencies in the fast changing world in which we live and work • CPD is defined as the maintenance and improvement of knowledge, skills and competence throughout a professional’s working life. It is about maintaining and improving standardsof competence and professionalism
Mandatory CPD • Usually a requirement for Chartered status • Measured in points or hours • Minimum points criteria for given calendar period • Input/attendance driven – often not measured against a competence.
Voluntary CPD • Development of individual capability • Generally driven by an individual’s need for career progression
Obligatory CPD • In between voluntary and mandatory • Members “obliged” to undertake CPD for the purposes of maintaining professional recognition
The NI CPD System • Voluntary • Supports different levels of entrants • Structured lifelong learning
