  1. Fractions, decimals, and visual data analysis by Bobby Stecher mark.stecher@maconstate.edu

  2. Renaming Fractions

  3. Adding and Subtracting Fractions

  4. Multiplying proper fractions

  5. Multiplying whole numbers 2 x 3 = 6 Why? 6 = X 1 2 3 4 5 6

  6. Multiplying a fraction and a whole number 1 1 7 x 3 = 2 2 =

  7. Multiplying a mixed number and a whole number 2 2 x 4 6 1 = 3 3 =

  8. Multiplying a mixed number and a whole number using rectangles 1 2 3 4 2 8 2 2 2 2 2 = = 4 + 4 x 4 + 6 3 3 3 3 3 3 3

  9. Multiplying Decimals The horizontal and vertical lines are divided into tenths. The grid has 10 x 10 = 100 squares.

  10. Dividing Fractions

  11. Dividing Fractions The common denominator of 4 and 6 is 12. So divide the divisor bar into 12ths . The yellow ¼ bar goes into the purple 7/6 bar 4 times and 2/3 of another.

  14. Ideas for Lesson Plans for Data Analysis • Use small bags of M&M’s or small boxes of raisins. Estimate the number in each container. Calculate the mean, median, and range. • Keep a chronological track of individual heights, or average high and low temperature.
