  2. Why might we think we are free • It feels like we are in control of some of our decisions • We hold people accountable for their actions • It seems that people might have done otherwise

  3. Determinism All of our choices are entirely pre-determined by prior causes. We could not have chosen otherwise

  4. Indeterminism Some of our decisions have no cause

  5. Libertarianism Some of our decisions are self (agent)-caused Cause Effect

  6. Why we might not be free • Many of our decisions are not make consciously; Hidden bias, for example. • Our brains seem to decide before we are aware of that decision

  7. The Unconscious Free decisions Un-free decisions

  8. Compatibilism All of our choices are determined. We could not have done otherwise. But if we are doing what we want to do, we are free and, therefore, responsible for our actions
