Deut. 22:26-29 • The God of Israel (vv. 26-27) A. Huge B. Help C. Home D. Hold II. The Israel of God (vv. 28-29)
Huge • Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, and marked off the heavens by the span? (Is. 40:12) • Rigel, of Orion’s Belt
Help • “Goodness and mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life.” (Ps. 23:6) • “For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” (2 Chron. 16:9) • “For from days of old they have not heard or perceived by ear; Nor has the eye seen a God besides You, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him.” (Is. 64:4)
Home • “The eternal God is your dwelling place” • “When you come to Him, you are home forever. He cannot be burned down, or blown down or broken into or foreclosed on. … Coming to Him is coming home forever.” (John Piper)
Home O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be Thou our guide while life shall last and our eternal home. (Isaac Watts)
Home • “In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and His children will have a refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26)
Hold • “Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.”(Is. 40:11)
The Majesty of His Power • “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know …what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.” (Eph. 1:18-19) • “I am God… I work and who can hinder it?” (Is. 43:13)
The Majesty of His Mercy God’s majesty is shown by His helping people. Other gods ride to be served. Our Lord rides to serve. “Therefore the LORD … exalts himself to show mercy to you.” (Is. 30:18)
“There is none like God, O [Israel]” • Baal was called the "rider of the clouds" in the Ugaritic myths. So Moses is asserting that Israel’s God, not Baal, is the true “Divine Sky Rider.” And He is unique in that He rides the skies to help His people.
II. The Israel of God (vv. 28-29) • Secure • Prosperous • Saved • Protected
What have I to dread, What have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms.
“There is none like the God of Jeshurun, Who ride the heavens to your help,And through the skies in His majesty”
