The New Kingdom of Egypt • New Kingdom – period of Egyptian history following the overthrow of the Hyksos from 1570-1075 B.C. • Hatshepsut – female pharaoh encouraged trade over warfare • Thutmose III – expanded Egypt upward into Palestine and Syria, and south into Nubia • Ramses II – declared peace with the Hittites • Said “Peace and Brotherhood between us forever”

The Kushites Conquer the Nile Region • “Sea People” attack Egypt and the Hittites, Egypt declines in power • Nubian Kingdom of Kush controlled Egypt from 2000-1000 B.C. • Kush was heavily influenced by Egyptian culture • Prices went to Egypt to study language and Egyptian worship • They adopted customs and clothing styles

The Golden Age of Meroe • Meroe – center of Kush dynasty form 250 B.C. to 150 A.D.; known for iron weapons and tools • Kushite royalty moved to Meroe after being defeated in Egypt by the Assyrians • Kush became very wealthy because of their abundance of iron ore
