First Grade is a year of growth and learning new skills. • Learning is a continuous and developmental process. • Hands-on activities and interactions are critical to young learners. • Understanding takes time and practice.
Balanced Literacy • Daily 5 literacy practice: • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Listen to Reading • Word Work • Writing • Reading instruction focused on 3 key areas: • Decoding/Accuracy • Fluency • Comprehension
Read to Self – “The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just right reading level.” • Read to Someone – “Reading to someone allows for time to practice strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community.” • Listen to Reading – “We hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers.” Daily 5 Reading
Journaling – “Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day.” • Writing – Prewrite, Rough Draft, Edit, Revise, Final Draft, Publish, Share. • Word Work - Teach children to read, spell, and use high-frequency words. Teach word family patterns which allow children to read and spell many other words. Daily 5 Writing
How you can help your child become a reader: • Read to your child daily. • Have your child read to you. • Take your child to the library. • Read signs and other text with your child at home and in the community. • Model your love of reading!
Homework • 20 minutes of reading daily. • Enrichment Activities – Optional/encouraged opportunity for students to practice the skills they have learned in class.
