  3. Final Giver Assignment • Memory Book • Assignment sheet: Questions? • Checklist/note taking space • Daily rough drafts • Should keep up with good copies each night at home • Final deadline for book: April 24, 2014.

  4. Memorable Quote • What is a quote (from a movie, a song, a family member, or a famous person: athlete, actor) that you would like to remember? • The quote should be cited correctly and appropriate for school • Quotation marks at end and beginning • Person’s name punctuated correctly, underneath it

  5. “Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.” -The Grateful Dead, “Scarlet Begonias”

  6. Fab 50 • 5 lists of 10 or 10 lists of 5 (or a combination of the two)…must be 50 total! • Think of all your favorite things collectively • Past and present • Organize your lists • Type final copy and add pictures if you would like • Be creative!

  7. Favorite Stores… • Marshall’s/HomeGoods • Target • Nordstrom Rack • The Gap • Old Navy

  8. Favorite Foods… • Pizza • Pasta • Cheesecake • Quesadillas • Bagel with cream cheese

  9. Favorite Places I’ve Been… • The Grand Canyon, Arizona • Santa Barbara, California • London, England • Manhattan, New York • Ocean City, New Jersey

  10. April 15, 2014PDN: • What are some positive, funny, exciting memories that you have from this past year? They can be related to school or could have taken place outside of school with family and friends. Make a list of as many good memories from this year that you can.

  11. Cover • Give your memory book a creative title. (What would your autobiography be called?) • The cover page should include at least one picture of you (from any point in your life) or a collage of pictures • It must also include the date you turn in your book (month, date, and year) • It must include your first and last name • Feel free to decorate the cover in any way you choose

  12. My 7th Grade Memory • The My 7th Grade Memory page of your Memory Book will consist of one single memory which you have from this year that you will never want to lose. • It should be a positive memory that includes important figures/figure in your life, a fun time, or a time when you learned something special. • This memory should stick out in your mind amongst all the others from this year • The memory can be from in school or outside of school (family, sports, etc.) • Must have occurred between September and now

  13. My 7th Grade Memory • “My 7th Grade Memory” should be displayed in the shape of your hand to signify that it is something special from this year that you want to hold onto forever. • For this, you should simply trace your hand with a marker and type/paste or handwrite your memory inside. • Your 7th grade memory should be about 2-3 sentences and must explain the memory as well as why it is important for you to hold on to • The final product should be visually appealing using color and/or decorations.

  14. Graphing Memorable Events • Brainstorm the ten most important things (positive and negative) that have happened in your life. Summarize each one with a phrase. • For example, if you moved to Pennsylvania from California and you feel that this was one of the most significant events in your life so far, write a phrase such as “Moving to PA from CA.” • After you have determined your 10 events, you will place your events on a graph. The graph has two purposes. The first purpose is to show the many things that have happened to you during your life. The second purpose is to mark the positive or negative feelings that you have associated with each event

  15. Graphing Memorable Events • -Using a ruler and graph paper, make an “L” shaped graph • -Along the x-axis (the bottom) label your 10 events in chronological order • -Along the y-axis (the left side) label the numbers from 0-10 • -Make sure the events and the numbers on the axes are evenly spaced • Please give your graph a title at the top • -After you have set up your graph, you are going to rate each event in your life on a scale of 0-10, 0 being a very negative event and 10 being the most positive event • All events do not need to be a different number, but try to get a good mix of positive and negative • -Plot a point at each event next to the number you rated the event • -After all 10 events have been rated, connect the dots in order from left to right • -Once the dots are connected, you should have successfully created a line graph of 10 significant events in your life and the feelings you associate with each event.

  16. April 16, 2014PDN: • Looking back on your entire life, what is one of the funniest memories you have? Think of one of the times when you laughed the hardest and explain the situation.

  17. Dedication Page • Identify the person or people to whom your Memory Book is being dedicated. Explain why you chose this person or people to honor with the dedication. • The dedication can be made to a collective group, single people, a person who has passed away, or someone who you have never met but admire • Must be AT LEAST two sentences • Remember to capitalize names and punctuate correctly

  18. Example 1: • “I am dedicating this book to my brother because he has always been an inspiration to me my whole entire life. He always knows what is right and wrong and has inspired me to be who I am.”

  19. Example 2: • “I want to dedicate this memory book to my mom, Sue, and my Grandmom, Maxine. I’m dedicating this to my mom because she takes care of me, she is always there for me, and she is very special to me. I am also dedicating this book to my Grandmombecause she is extremely special and I love her very much. Even though she isn’t with me anymore, she will always be in my heart and memories.”

  20. How I want to be remembered… • How would you like to be remembered by others? • Could relate to school, your career, your family, friendships, etc. • Should relate to future goals and ambitions • Should be at least 3 sentences long and explain how you want to be remembered and why. • “I want to be remembered as a teacher who made a difference in the lives of her students. This is my hope because I put great effort and time into doing everything I can to help my students succeed. I hope that they can each take something away from my class as a memory of their own.

  21. Journal Entry • Catchy and descriptive title • Quotation marks around the title • Written in present tense (as if you are reliving it) • Should not be over the course of more than one day (not an entire vacation, etc.) • Use multiple paragraphs (not one, long ramble) • Use signal words/transition words • At least 200 words in length

  22. Journal Entry • First Day of school • Physical hurt story • Funny Family story • Caught Ya! Story • Rites of Passage story (you realized you were growing up) • Holiday story • First Time I story • Weather story • Funniest Moment story

  23. “Brace Face” I’m walking into the orthodontist right now to get my braces on. I’m feeling a little nervous. I’m still waiting to be called into the room. My mom and I are talking now. I ask her how long it will probably take. She says a while. Now, I finally get called back. I tell my mom to come with me. So now I’m sitting in the room with all these things in my mouth. I’m managing to ask my mom to get my phone from the car. I’m waiting, now for the orthodontist to put on my braces. Now, first, they are putting on the glue. My tongue is being held back by this red squishy thing so the glue doesn’t get wet and I’m swallowing so much saliva. It’s been about 1 ½ hours now and the orthodontist and his assistant are still working in my mouth. I am playing a game on my phone. And now I am sending a picture to a few of my friends of the things in my mouth. Finally, the orthodontist is putting the wires in. It’s finally over now after about 2 ½ hours. I am leaving the orthodontist and my teeth hurt a little. Since there is a Wawa right next door, my mom takes me to get a milkshake. My mouth is still numb so the milkshake is dripping down my mouth and I can’t feel even feel it. I tell my mom about the weird feeling and we are cracking up the whole ride home.

  24. April 17, 2014PDN: • What is one thing you plan on doing during your day off tomorrow? Explain.

  25. Foreword • A foreword is a short piece of writing found at the beginning of a book or other piece of literature. This is usually written by the primary author of the work. • Often, a foreword will tell of some connection between the writer of the foreword and the story or book. • It allows the author to tell the reader about the purpose of the book.

  26. Foreword • Use the first three paragraphs on your memory book assignment sheet as a guide to write a summary of the memory book assignment in your own words. • It should be personal and it should be at least one solid paragraph long (four sentences or more.) Your goal is to explain the assignment so that when you look at your memory book many years from now, you will remember why you made it as well as be reminded of this current time in your life. • In order to do this, you might think about discussing what a memory is to you, and how the memory book connects to Lois Lowry’s The Giver, as well as the class and year involved with this assignment

  27. Example 1 • A memory is something you can hold onto and it teaches you wisdom for your life. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, which we read in Reading class, there are no memories, no color, and no choices in life in the community Jonas is a part of. So, this book is stuffed with a pack of memories (that’s why it is called a Memory Book). It let’s me cherish all the funny, stupid, and highly embarrassing memories for the rest of my life. Keep note that only some of my life experiences are enclosed in this book. Only the funny stories and important things that my family has bestowed on me.

  28. Example 2 • A memory is the power or process of remembering and the storing of things remembered. The reason for making this memory book is to help myself remember memories from my childhood when I am older. This is just like the book, The Giver, which we finished reading in my 7th grade Reading class. The people in this community do not have memories. When I am older I don’t want to forget any memories because they are all special. A memory is something that should be treasured forever. This book will help me remember special memories and people when I am older.

  29. 5-10 Memory Pictures • You will need to give each picture a title. • You will need to explain WHO is in the picture. If there are people other than you, make sure you explain their relationship to you. • Explain WHAT is happening in the picture. • Explain WHY the picture was taken (why it is important). • Describe WHEN the picture was taken. Provide as much information as possible (month/date/year). • Explain WHERE the picture was taken. Be specific.

  30. A Wedding to Remember… • This picture of my sister, Daisy, mom, and I was taken on September 29, 2012. It was taken by my Dad at the reception of my best friend Lauren’s wedding. We are standing outside of a barn on a farm in Bedminster, PA. It was cold for September and I remember asking my dad to stop taking pictures because I didn’t want to miss out on the appetizers. This picture was taken to help us all remember this big moment in our lives, especially since Daisy and I grew up with Lauren and her sister as our best friends…so close we call each other sisters. It was a beautiful day and I remember being so happy for her!

  31. All Memory Books… • Will be turned in to me by: Thursday, April 24th. • All aspects must be computer generated (with the exceptions of: the cover, “My 7th Grade Memory”, and the Memory Graph) • Be sure to make your book creative and check spelling and punctuation!
