ManchesterCityfootballclubwasoriginallyfoundedin 1880. Backthen, itwasknownasSaintMarks (WestGorton), whichthenchangedtobeknownasArdwick A.F.C. intheyear 1887. Theclubfinallysettledonitscurrentname, ManchesterCityFootballClub, intheyear 1894.
ManCityhasdefinitelyhaditsupsanddownthroughtheyears. Perhapsitsmostsuccessfulperiodinhistorywasbetweentheendofthe 1960s andthebeginningofthe 1970s. ManchesterCitywonanamazingnumberoftrophiesbetweenthoseyears, includingthe FA Cupin 1969, theLeagueCuptwicein 1970 and 1976, theCharityShieldin 1968 and 1972, andtheEuropeanCupWinner'sCupin 1970. Asonecanseefromthisimpressivelist, theyearsbetweenthe late-1960s and early-1970s wereincrediblysuccessfulonesforthebluehalfofManchester. • Unfortunately, however, afterthisamazingperiodoftimewhentheManCityflourished, theyhadquite a slumpandstruggledquite a lotas a team. Citymadeittothe 1981 FA CupFinalbutultimatelyendeduplosing. Itwasquiteanupsettinglossfortheteamanditsmanylegionsoffans. ManchesterCitywasalsorelegatedfromtopflightduringthe 80s. Theymanagedtoagainstartrisingineminence, thensufferedanotherslowdecline. Theglorydaysseemedtobewellbehindthematthispointintheirhistory.
ManchesterCity FC waspartoftheoriginalPremierLeaguelineupin 1992, butsadlytheyendedupbeingrelegatedtoDivisionOnein 1996. ThustheupsanddownsinthefortunesoftheManchesterCityFootballclubcontinuedon. Cityseemedtogetitsgamegoingprettywellfor a periodoftimethereafter, onlytoberelegatedonceagainin 2001. Happily, however, theywontheDivisionOnechampionshipfor 2001-2002, whichwas a greateventforfansoftheclubandwasmuchtalkedaboutandremarkeduponatthetime. • ThroughoutitshistoryManCityhadbasicallyalwaysplayedat a stadiumcalledMaineToad. In 2003, though, Citymovedto a newstadiumwhichisknownastheCityofManchesterStadium. Thiswasquite a bigeventinManchesterandreceivedmuchattentionfromfansandthepress. Aftermovingintotheirnewhome, andsincethattime, Cityhasexperiencedmuchdramawithitsleadershipandperformances. Theclubremains, however, oneofthemostpopularinEnglandtothisdayandsincebeingtakenoverbyAbuDhabibasedbillionairestheirfanscanseenothingbutgreatthingsforManCity.
